Introduction and Historical Overview

The Department of English at Government Degree College Chail-Koti was established in July 2014, concurrent with the founding of the college itself. Since its inception, the Department has been committed to imparting quality education in English language and literature, nurturing students’ communicative competence, literary sensibilities, and critical thinking.

Mission & Teaching Philosphy

Th Department Aims to:

  • Foster proficiency in English language skills — reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.
  • Encourage literary appreciation and analytical skills through the study of diverse texts.
  • Promote critical thinking and interdisciplinary understanding relevant to humanities and social sciences.
  • Prepare students for academic, professional, and creative pursuits beyond undergraduate study.

Teaching pedagogy emphasizes interactive classroom learning, regular assignments, presentations, and student engagement with both classic and contemporary texts. Support is offered to students from Hindi-medium backgrounds in line with university norms, ensuring inclusive learning for all enrolled students.

Academic Programmes

The Department offers English as part of the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programme. English is available both as a compulsory and an elective subject under the curriculum prescribed by Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. Courses cover fundamental language skills and literary studies to help students develop strong interpretative and expressive capabilities.

  • Literary Club: The Literary Club, established to promote literary engagement on campus, actively encourages students to participate in activities such as poetry recitals, prose readings, and debates that enhance their communication skills. In addition, the Club regularly organizes expert lectures for the academic enrichment of students.
  • Through these events, students are encouraged to develop confidence, leadership qualities, and organizational skills beyond the classroom.

Educational Qualification: M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in English from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla–5. UGC-NET (qualified twice), HP-SET.

Experience: 12 years of teaching and research experience in higher education.
